About the Short Story Contest

Since 2002, IPDAE and the Leverdógil de Freitas Library have been holding short story contests with the aim of developing writing skills and disseminating the texts being produced here.

By writing a story, writers can reveal both their inner and outer worlds. At the same time, this enables readers to recognize themselves or other people they know in the stories..

The identification process develops through the sensibility awakened by the text. When readers get in touch with the story their imagination is awakened; they drift away from reality and enter the fictional world created by the author.

As to this, Mempo Giardianelli says that, “Every good short story needs to strike a chord of the reader.”

The primary characteristics of a short story must converge to impress the reader. Hence, a short story must mix imagination and emotion; have a narrative structure with few characters – those indispensable to understanding the plot –; and introduce a time, a setting, and a tone.

The shorter structure of this literary genre enables the impacts of single effect, concentration, intension or tension, all features that make readers enjoy what they are reading.
