LEVERDÓGIL DE FREITAS LIBRARY | BRANCH 1   The library provides a collection of 32 thousand books, which have been donated by several people and institutions. Currently, the library has over 2,800 member readers. Every month, over 1,500 books are loaned for both entertainment and research. The library has been used by people from Lomba do Pinheiro as well as from other districts and neighboring towns of Porto Alegre. Most of these people are students attending Elementary School and High School, as well as undergraduates who do their readings and research in the library. People from the local community are regular readers. There are some people who have read up to 136 books a year. Children are avid readers too; the library is thus encouraged to provide an updated section of children’s book. To become a member, users are required to present their identity card, proof of residence, and pay a R$ 2,00 fee. (Membership expires in two years). Members can loan up to three books, which must be returned within a week or two. A book can be renewed for an additional two weeks, if not being required by another member.. The library’s name commemorates the memory of Leverdógil de Freitas, a prominent man of the theater in the Southern Brazil. Besides being a great actor, Lever (as his friends used to call him) was a great person. |
